Circa 1850
medallion and spandrals incorporate elements of city carpets in their outlining, with elegant trefoils extending into the field. The meandering leaf and blossom main border, traditional to Bakshaish rugs, is drawn with unusually graceful lines. Poetic verse in flowing calligraphy fills pillars that frame the medallion. The exceptional use of gradual, yet continual abrash in the field and smaller elements reveal the profound Bakshaish use of color shading to create visual depth. The freely rendered powder blue flower at the center of this 170-year-old art carpet is inspired imagery from this always inventive weaving tradition.
