The numbers of rugs ascribed to Hadji Baba Ganjeh are far less prolific than other eminent Tabriz traditions and, as a result, much more rarely found. Claret and secondary blue teal tonalities distinguish this independent floral designer’s work as well as creative field designs where leaves predominate over flowers. A magnificent elongated medallion and pendant ensemble is surrounded by a luxuriant blanket of softly swirling lancet leaves, vinery, and blossoms expressed through astounding technical prowess.

This quintessential area-size from the renowned Hadji Jallili Tabriz workshop is a sterling example of the great elegance of the classical medallion-on an open-field design.
The symmetry is absolute, the detail so fine the bend of each boteh (paisley-like motif) in the field, and each cypress tree in the main border is stirring.
Together all the elements seem to pulse in place around and on top of the many tonal layers in the copper field, creating a sense of dimensionality that comes and goes dynamically as one’s eyes scan across this rug. The contrast between the field’s warm depth and the secondary palette of soft yellows and cool blues serves the intended entrancing effect.

This luxuriant area-size Isfahan inherits a pedigree of craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity that were informed by a long history of regal workshops of the Safavid dynasty in this 16th century capital city. With a knot density of over 300 kpsi, and lamb’s wool surface radiating an enchanting luster, its lush patterning appears to circulate around the sophisticated center medallion. The mind-boggling field contains detailed cloudbands and numerous exotic birds within foliage in various postures. The signature Isfahan colors are here radiantly rendered with powder, sky, and ice blues in harmonious interplay with rich carnelian reds and deeper-hued cobalt. This piece has been treated with great respect for a period of 100 years, as it comes to us in remarkable, unblemished full-pile condition.
This carpet is attributed to the acclaimed Persian painter, Mirza Agha Emami from Isfahan.

The unlimited beauty of nature is reflected in a flowering “Garden of Paradise” joyously rendered, replete with myriad tiny luminous flowers filling the ivory reserve. This one-in-the-world 19th-century Persian Tabriz rug is given striking originality with the rare depiction of two brilliant bottle green peacocks that vigorously guard the delicately depicted arboreal motifs that ascend the length of the rug. As their lithe undulous trunks make their way skyward, the twin trees weave and intertwine on their way to the top of the field. In the lower corners, powder blue amphora vases are filled with bouquets arranged from the profusion of species found throughout the field, symbolizing the abundance of natural life. Engaging hues derived from organic sources, including a profusion of ripe raspberry, jade, lilac, glowing rose, and glistening delft blue, dance across the surface to enliven every bloom. A superb level of craftsmanship and wonderful condition combine to create an artful gem of a 19th-century rug.

Offering a triumphant departure from the deep brick reds traditional to Ferahan Sarouk , this memorable piece opts for a more distinctive range of color, including dusky rose, warm rusts, celadon, buttercup, and apricot. Its unique artistry begins with the boldly muscular medallion, encased in broad vinery juxtaposed with the delicately diminutive floral ornamentation of the indigo interior, which ultimately extends into a pair of regal crown pendants. The filigreed foliage of the aged ivory reserve is more realistically rendered, with an adept layering of large and small scale elements as well as an almost crystalline clarity of the drawing, yields an awe-inspiring finale.
A rare border offering features lusciously plumed rosettes, peerlessly shaded in a vibrant chiaroscuro, are all interlaced by vinery that slowly transitions from an electrum hue at the bottom to a soothing jungle green as it winds upward.

“CYPRESS TREE” We find and acquire noteworthy Dorasht rugs and carpets from time to time as 19th century specimens are seldom encountered. This very original and finely woven Dorasht hails from the easternmost Persian Khorassanian provinces that share an unbroken Court-centric weaving legacy since 16th century Safavid times. It offers the “Tree of Life” theme, picturing the seldom-portrayed cypress tree motif as the centerpiece of the rug. Surrounded by avian and horned creatures, this statuesque conifer with a miniature version as its nucleus, energizes the botanical extravaganza inside and on the carnelian reserve. Spotted ibex-like creatures portrayed in a flying gallop flank it, while two mythical animals, half lion and half deer strut underneath the unfurled branches. At its very top, camouflaged cerulean parrots solemnly tend to the great cypress as an act of piety while a half dozen, ornately-striped avian inhabitants roost among the foliage. Canine companions that conjure the Latin phrase ‘cave canem’ (Beware the dog!) in the upper spandrels are tethered to the scalloped archway as if guarding the doorway to this phantasmagorical landscape. Woven crystal clarity, the suite of seven borders reflects the admirable craftsmanship of this style that has beguiled centuries of rug lovers. It is all the more enticing with its extraordinary heavy pile.

Superb clarity of drawing, top-caliber craftsmanship, and a wide array of soft jewel tones combine to make this century-old Kashan a premier demonstration of classical artistry and quality. Nearly absolute symmetry controls an abundant verdure of floral forms that unfurl around the carnelian lotus-centered medallion, woven with life-like verisimilitude and exquisite detail. Its lush color palette is silhouetted against midnight indigo and encompasses butter yellow, cerulean, coral, arctic blue, and juniper, with hints of emerald and apricot peppered throughout. The sculptural treatment that touches upon every botanical element in the field continues in the charming border. With its silky lanolin-rich wool, extremely fine knotting, and excellent condition, this captivating Persian City rug would make a fitting addition to a sophisticated home environment.

Each blossom and brass-toned leaf were carefully rendered by an expert weaver who settled for nothing less than pinpoint excellence. Among the rarest types of antique Heriz are those with calligraphic cartouches of nastaliq poetry running round them. This is one of a pair that I bought a few years apart, each on a different continent! I love it when the Universe throws me such a happy coincidence.
They were made in the same workshop by the same hand, sharing the same medallion and Mahi patterning (unusual for Heriz) as well as the poetry and the ‘turtle’ border. Both are woven on woolen warps, a sign of significant age.

From the city that was the 16th century capital of the Safavid dynasty where the Persian floral carpet was created and reached its heights, this Isfahan conveys an ambiance that is both exotic and magical. Levitating at the center of the arboreal scene, a grand scale ruby red vase exuberantly overflows with pinpoint blossoming boughs. Fanciful vase-borne columns hold aloft a gracefully scalloped arch that harbors exotic birds with eye-catching plumage. An incredible display of vegetally sourced golden hues abound, the foil to equally magnificent copper and garnet, sapphire, rose, celadon, spruce green and midnight indigo that populate this inimitable portrait of paradise.

An exceptionally aesthetically pleasing, asymmetric pattern of ever-changing giant flowerheads, palmettes, fronds, and buds meanders across a rare alabaster ground in this enchanting Persian Sultanabad. Bold outlining lends dimensionality and amplifies the visceral impact of every vine, petal, and leaf. We see here the most famous and recognizable of all Isfahan designs, the Eslimi spiraling arabesques that twirl so musically around the medallion. What catches both the eye and breath is the alluring turquoise blue which is inspired by and woven in homage to the city’s rich architectural history best symbolized by the blue capped domes and minarets from the Seljuk and Safavid periods. The tonality of the blue here, however, is different from later Isfahan carpet blues. It has an aura, a depth that invite the viewer in to an azure sea and loses them in its waves. The abrashed field adds to the allure and mystique and is far from flat or tepid as other blues may end up looking. This is due to the formidable vegetable dyes used in this carpet. They, and the unorthodox size, confirm this is an early (i.e. very old) Isfahan masterpiece a full generation before the establishment of the Seirafian workshops.

This beautifully designed, superbly crafted 145-year-old Tabriz evokes a quiet grandeur that emanates from the double-layered teardrop medallion across the softly undulating salmon field to ivory spandrels echoing the graceful lines at the center.
Two different overscale blossoms alternate compactly in the main border, giving this piece an ornate frame while featuring the gracious palette of hues from cinnabar and teak to citrine, teal, and pippin, as well as periwinkle and touches of mandarin.
The movement of the organically drawn green arabesques in the central medallion are faintly mirrored in the field’s narrow vinery and more visibly in corner pieces, together effecting a dexterously wrought, graceful, dancelike ambiance.

One of the great principles of beauty inherited and understood by the master weavers of Persia was the use of dramatic color contrasts to create a powerful artistic impact. That sense, inherited from a centuries-deep pedigree, is especially poignant in carpets with such a lush botanical pattern as elegantly portrayed as this over-century-old masterwork. From a scalloped and faceted midnight medallion encased in swirling vinery, a profusion of flowers and foliage proliferates along wire-thin branches. Rococo-like corner spandrels demonstrate an elaborate architectural decorative flair. Sophisticated hues range from strawberry vermilion, delicate pistachio, tangerine, ice blue, and seldom-seen spruce greens to create profound chromatic textures and dramatic contrasts. The wonderfully festive border is ultimately based on the classical Shah Abbas design, where globular palmettes gently rest on a bed of what appear to be evergreen boughs. Luminous wool quality and very good condition add to the appeal of this hand-crafted, highly refined court carpet. by : Bukowskis

This lavishly patterned antique Persian Shah Abasi design carpet offers sheer elegance and charisma in a dimension that is easily adaptable to a wide variety of decorative settings. Its color palette is amplified by the purposeful morphing of shadings one to another, a prized technique known as “color Royal” that creates a painterly texture and endless visual interest. This is especially poignant in the shift from azure to paled Blue Green in the reserve. An atypical shade of golden Sahara sand also features prominently in the medallion and spandrels. Graceful botanical borders enhance its regal appeal and overall balance of the composition, and its glistening, heavy pile adds tremendously to its allure.

The flotilla of regimented medallions is like oases of geometric gardens, a pattern that extends beyond the field infinitely according to the traditional concept of Persian weavers.

I really love this old Kashan. It has a fabulous design, rich and lush with Garden of Eden imagery, with attractive coloration reliant on neutral earthy tones. The size is very handy and useful, and the condition is perfect. It’s signed by the master weaver in each of the 4 corners.
This directional style may well be my favourite of all Kashan styles. It’s very hard to find nowadays in sizes larger than qaliche format.

This exemplary 19th-century Sultanabad offers an elegantly balanced and fluid overall design employing several scales of well-spaced flower heads to create its remarkable, quite intriguing visage. Chromatically distinctive with the use of rich jewel tones and sonorous earthy shades on an ivory field, this prismatic display is framed by a rust-red border using a condensed palmette and vinery pattern to complement the interior spaciousness. The inspired, deftly hidden field design is based on an hourglass described by branches that gather at the green leaf motif in the center, ascending and descending outwardly from there.

A superb , classical example of the penultimate floral rug style of the 19th century, this small room size Mohtasham Kashan piece conveys an unfathomable level of craftsmanship and sublimely delicate drawing of its motifs. Set apart by glistening lamb’s wool, a virtuoso layering of concentric fluted medallions creates a widening display of exquisite detail.
