The allure of a quite early Serapi such as this is in the simplicity of the pattern language and the glowing, patina of age on the colors. This piece offers many nascent motifs of this now esteemed artistic tradition. Here a completely elemental center medallion invites exploration of its abstractly rendered vines and blossoms with every slender horizontal tendril culminating in a solitary motif. The seasoned tones of this standout piece are riveting, especially the highly abrashed, splendid spectrum of watermelon to crimson Serapi reds in the field. The Shah Abbas border is captivatingly idiosyncratic yet magically elegant framed by celadon accent bands that remain iridescent and captivating still today.
