About Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS)

Imam Reza (AS), the eighth imam of Shia, was born in 148 A.H. in Medina and in 203 A.H. when he was 55, he was martyred in Toos to the order of Ma'moon Abbasi. He was buried in Hamid ibn Ghahtabeh Garden in Sanabad which was later called Mashhad ur-Reza (AS) - the place of martyrdom of Imam Reza (AS) - and today, it is known as Mashhad. Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) is a complex that surrounds Holy Tomb of Imam Reza (AS) and includes mosques, porches, courtyards, museums and a library. The area of the complex of Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (AS) is 70 hectares with 26 porches (enclosed space), 9 courtyards (open space) and 6 entrances.
