One of the most magical Malayers I’ve ever seen! Here’s a sneak peek for our dearest clients. Another unique antique artwork.
The colors are outrageous relying on a one of a kind cafe au lait brown field. Zoom in and behold the wonders of the flowers and leaves! The weaver truly did her best and took her time to create something unforgettable. The next owner is gonna be one lucky person indeed.
As an art dealer what excites me most is the Mishan weaving quality, the perfect excellence of condition and above all the incredible pardeh size: 220 x 145.

An early generation masterpiece from the famed Seirafian workshop in Isfahan, this carpet is unusually large. Most of their production, especially early on from the 1930s to the 1960s, consisted of ghaliche size rugs averaging 2 meters length. The scale of this is gigantic in comparison.
It is in 100% superb condition with vegetable dyes and significant silk highlights. The fringes are complete and in silk with the bottom silk kilim intact. Persian carpet collectors will be hard pressed finding a better example of signed master weaver art.

Have you ever seen such a design in olden Kashan? It’s really beautiful and uniquely allover, haven’t seen it elsewhere. This antique piece has glowingly saturated natural dyes, and boasts a very sweet room size of 7.25 sqm. One of a kind!
Exquisite tribal rug with standout natural dyes. The green medallion and navy blue corners are intoxicatingly beautiful. As is the charmingly meandering border. The waif like boteh forms denote a Kashkuli origin which the weave supports. It is extremely fine with one of the highest knot counts for a wool on wool rug. It’s one of the better tribal rugs I’ve had and one that comes with no regrets.

THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL
I find these marvellous Mishan Malayers to be among the most rewarding of all carpets, old or new. A fantastic sense of balance and scale, confidence in colors and ambition in drawing, above all a terrific playfulness in the overall design. All of this is present in spades in this joyful and unforgettable Malayer.

There are great rugs and there are others touched by a higher form of genius.
Enjoy this all time classic from the hands of the formidable Grand Master Ahmad Shahapour.
Available to our local clients all around the world.
The signed artworks of Grand Master Mohammad Dabir Al Sanayeh are among the greatest, finest and rarest of all Persian antique carpets. He revolutionised the art of carpet design and weaving in Kashan in the early 1900s, allowing the entire history of Kashan rugs to be divided into two periods: the Mohtasham school of the 19th century and the Dabir school of the 20th. In fact all—each and every single—rugs made in Kashan over the last 100 years owe their style and raison d’être to Masyer Dabir.
This breathtaking vase and flower carpet is one of only two of his that I have seen in the exclusive and exceptionally rare size 6 sqm size. The Kork Manchester clothing wool he used glistens and shimmers with the ferocity and brilliance of the terrific, high grade natural dyes. All his signature floral motifs and styles are incorporated here: the slender waisted vases; rotund carnations and round roses; the perched lovebirds peering back; the semicircular lotus flowers; the wispy vines cascading upwards and defying gravity …

The epitome of luxury in olden times was a mint condition ultra fine Senneh rug woven on a pure silk foundation with captivatingly long and lush fringes. Like this looker here, with its attractive creme field and richly detailed drawing.
What makes it extra special? Gives it more oomph? The unique pardeh size. Whereas 99% clocked in at 190 x 130 cm Senneh Ghaliche size, this is a beautiful big monster. It is so rare to encounter such a large Senneh, perfectly preserved, on silk warps.

Today’s reveal is a succulent antique Qajar Tehran woven with all silk flowers on a silk foundation. It is absolutely magnificent and tremendously rich. It’s not on my website yet and I believe it’s the first time I’m publishing it.
The Qajar dynasty sought inspiration amongst royal Safavid arts when they decided to project a veneer of cultured legitimacy in the 1800s. Few such carpets survived, based on the Shah Abbas lotus flower theme going back to the 1500s infusing it with silk only added to the appeal.
Superb condition with full pile.
The distinctive royal Tehran burgundy is stellar, the alluring blues most mesmeric.

KORK KASHAN BY SAFAZADEH, dated 1300
Grand Master Safazadeh was arguably the most talented carpet designer and producer in old Kashan, second only to the legendary Mohammad Dabir Al Sanaye.
This is a most excellent creation of his, glorious in its saturated natural dyes and attractive with its beautifully drawn motifs. A confident medallion is surrounded by curling saz leaves, blooming lotus flowers, and all manner of paradisal garden imagery. You won’t find a better example in the marketplace. I know I haven’t in over two decades.

Ultra fine antique pair of Kork Kashan from another dimension of finesse and quality. You’ve all seen many of type but this duo really astonished me. They fold like melting butter.
The quality of the dyes is also superb. Note how varied they are and how rich. The greens are a standout that we rarely encounter; I count 3 distinct tones of green as of blue. This range of dyeing and the attention to detail make this pair truly impressive and one (or 2?) of a kind.
The pattern is glorious too: landscape cartouches, flowering Goldani vases, elegant Mehrab prayer niches, and Golestan Millefleurs roses all over.

3rd Quarter XIX Century
Back from the Carpet Spa, its first visit in over 30 years! I posted this wonderful antique Kork Kashan (14 sqm, circa 1925) a couple weeks ago. My dad bought it in the 1990s and since then it’s been lounging in our stores, so I figured I’d send it for a bath and not its back with a glow. And now it’s ready to go to a new forever home. Any suitors?
The Khans or chiefs of the Bakhtiari tribe were the most powerful and richest feudal lords in Persia in the period 1900-1920. They funneled their wealth into some of the country’s foremost carpet workshops and commissioned a number of ultra fine masterpieces for their mansions and estates.
This marvelous beauty was commissioned by the tribal chief Agha Morteza Qoli Khan in the year 1325. The knot count is remarkably high, for a tribal rug or otherwise. The real star of the show are the incredible dye materials especially the saffron yellow and apricot.

3 x 2 format Malayer rugs are exceedingly rare. They usually come in either dozar or kelleh formats. This makes the present size very demanded, in addition to its functional appeal.
It retains a tribal, rustic charm. Note the grinning girls and the stylised peacocks. The boteh motifs float like seahorses in the midnight blue sea. Glorious condition, extant end kilim. All original.

MANCHESTER KASHAN PARADISE GARDEN
For Persian carpet lovers this is pure magic. It is a stellar example from the golden age of ‘Manchester’ Kashan weaving at the turn of the century when enterprising merchants in Kashan imported finely spun wool from the textile mills of Victorian Britain that was intended for weaving the finest cloaks and robes and instead used it in their carpet workshops. As a result no carpets in the world—apart from the Pashmina wonders of 17th century Mughal India—have a shinier and softer pile than these Manchester Kashan masterpieces.
Most of them obviously are of small size and the vast majority of this limited group are of traditional medallion design. Hence the unbelievable attraction of this room size landscape stunner. The lush woodlands and forests, the dense foliage of the trees and the flowers, the allure of the natural world on majestic display. Factor in the truly unreal color combination of creamy field with pinkish border with dollops of soft blue. As good as it gets, this carpet is.

Farahan silk rugs from the 1800s are rarer than their Kashan or Tabriz counterparts. Within this exclusive group we tend to find far more ghaliche rugs averaging 2 meters length than the smaller zaronim format of 1.5 meters length. The finesse of weave is quite impressive and the golden coloration rather unusual. It glistens like a sheet of metal.

Dedicated to the memory of my father, the coolest magician and wisest wizard of carpetdom of all time.
Monday morning with a marvel of a Mishan Malayer.
I love Malayers. The exciting range of designs, the attractive dye materials, the firm yet soft nature of their weave.. I find they combine the best of all worlds, the finesse of professional workshop carpets and the charm and spontaneity of tribal rugs. In this case, we add a vital element of rarity and that is the very desirable size. Usually for such a length of 3.5 meters the width would not go beyond 1.8 meters yet in this case we have a very harmonious width of 2.6 meters. Sublime.
The all over boteh field allows it to fit in easily in any setting. The blue border is among the best that has been ever made.

As promised a few days ago, here’s a tour of the interior of the most sumptuous antique prayer rug we’ve seen in years. A tour de force of the weaver’s craft, it perfectly balances minimalist abstraction with rich ornamentation. All achieved with a very mature use of attractive coloration, elaborate drawing—and silk.
Not to be missed. A joy to watch.
AN IMPORTANT QAJAR TABRIZ
We have been fortunate in assembling a first rate collection of Qajar period masterpieces signed and owned by members of the royal family and aristocracy.
This is a highlight of the Hajji Jalili school of the late 1800s, that specialised in large decorative carpets with medium knotting qualities. It defies norms with its small qaliche size and excessively fine knot count.
The camel tones apricot field bursts alive with a stunning take on the Millefleurs design popular on royal Tehran rugs, combining the beautifully drawn cypress trees with the flowering vase and mehrab niche.
The carpet bears a lengthy inscription which explains its role as a ceremonial gift, almost certainly to the Shah or a member of his immediate family:
Commissioned by order of His Excellency the exalted Nasrallah Khan, Naqqash Bashi (chief painter to court). Above is a smaller inscription saying Mobarak Bad or congratulations.
Evidently this was a (possibly Nowruz new year) gift created two years ahead by the painter laureate to gift to his sovereign.
The First Harshang Bakhshayesh
Published by Herrmann in Seltene Orientteppiche IV in 1982, this is one of the all time Bakhshayesh greats. It dates to the early 19th century and is a unique artwork for various reasons:
1. The saffron yellow tonality.
2. The Harshang design, one of the most vibrant and collectible styles of the 18th century.
3. The exciting range of vegetable dyes, including various shades of blue, pink and green.
4. The all wool foundation.
5. The uncommon size.
For additional info, the carpet was published in my book The Persian Carpet: The Forgotten Years 1711-1872 as one of the very few surviving rugs from the Heriz district to be produced circa 1800.
