Visually speaking, this really ought to be a Tehran but in fact it is an early Kashan from the Dabir generation. The all over Shah Abbas field of lotus flowers, palmettes, and arabesques is populated with lions, dragons and other mythical creatures--exactly what you would find on Tehran rugs. This makes it quite a unique find for a Kashan, especially with its cream field.

Magnificent Shoureshi Isfahan with 16 secret peacocks hidden gracefully within the stunning design.
Carpets of the early Shoureshi tradition like this boast attractive earthy tones and heartwarming natural dyes. The ivory field is complemented by a delightful camel coloured border.
The rotund medallion is elegantly silhouetted and detailed, a Babylonian sun disc with eye catching interior features. The detailing of the field and corner spandrels reveal more riches of the weaver’s masterful imagination.
The dimensions, as well as the drawing and composition, confirm this is a carpet over 100 years old from the beginning of the 20th century.

Exquisite pair of antique Isfahan beauties woven & signed by the highly esteemed master weaver Sarraf Maamoury. They present harmonious earthy tones and a calming palette.
It’s noteworthy to point out that the twins are identical yet the signature cartouche on one is in mirror writing.

This impressive antique carpet reminds me of Virgil’s Georgics, an epic poem he published in 29 BCE towards the end of the last civil war of the Roman Republic. One year after Cleopatra’s suicide, a topic I covered in the preceding post.
It is lush with natural scenery and abundant in color. We see a human hand behind the construction of the marbled stone podium on which the flowering vase rests. That in turn reminds me of Keats’ Ode on a Grecian Urn, published in 1819. Much closer in date to the time of creation of this fantastic Tabriz carpet, added today to the collection.

I love this select group of Kork Kashan with Paradise Park design from circa 1900. This is a rare one with ivory field and red border. One of my favourites.
COSIMO

Exquisitely fine, heartbreakingly attractive. This glorious Serapi Heriz survives intact and boasts some of the prettiest natural dyes you will see. There's an abundance of saffron and green in the field but the knockout punch is the killer blue border--literally to dye for!

Fine antique Persian Kerman rug with an elegant floral garden design in soft pastels on a navy blue ground surrounding a meditative centerpiece of layered petalform mandalas. The fine florals continue in the five part border that subtly transitions from pale jade green to buttercream. The graceful arabesque corners are rose pink. The generous size, soft fleecy wool, and excellent state of preservation are rare.

Happiness is ... an unusually large (and wide) Khamseh Morghy (bird) rug with the most beautiful, ravishing sky blue tones. Hundreds of peacocks flutter about in a dizzying array of harmonious natural dyes. The weaver was highly skilled and tasteful, and this shows in the kaleidoscopic colorful segments around the field and within the border. A most excellent antique tribal rug.
305 x 222
Circa 1900-1910
A sublime antique Serapi of the early type with ravishing colors and uncommon size.
The attractive combo of ivory, pinkish red and celestial blue is captivating. The carpet is complete with lovingly distressed areas that beautifully capture the charm of age and patina of time. This warrior has seen many battles and triumphed! The indigo medallion has stubbornly refused to oxidise (typical for the king of natural dyes) and remains, along with many areas, in full pile.
492 x 376
Circa 1865-1875
All natural dyes
In my private collection, a most royal Qajar Tehran circa 1870 with royal crown and an excessively rich flowering vase design. It makes the Millefleurs look simple by comparison.
Very subtle and elegantly saturated natural dyes, composed of tones very tastefully set off against one another. I love the signature Tehran prayer rug spandrels in deep golden saffron.
Perfect condition right down to the end kilim and full pile. This masterpiece has been lovingly preserved by a series of collectors over 150 years and has never been used.

Simply incredible. A majestic Paradise Park roomsize carpet woven in Kashan circa 1900 using the softest and plushest Manchester Kork wool.
The fiber materials are sensationally fine, the dye materials even more exceptional. The tones are so gentle and alluring, especially the strawberry pink main border and its turquoise outermost guard.
Aesthetically, the Garden Of Eden theme is executed in a most impressive fashion. Lush forestry and dense greenery combine to create a lovingly manicured garden carpet with beautiful details throughout. Birds of paradise flutter around within and without, in between the weeping willows and plane and oak trees. Here and there we see a small house and occasionally a rooster—this was the signature of the weaver, according to the white beards who taught me in the bazar.

Southwest Persian rugs hold a sweet spot in our hearts at Steelman Rugs. We appreciate the really old pieces as well as some of the beauties made up to 1970. As long as the rug has spirit and energy, we tend to appreciate it. The name Shiraz seems to be a catch-all for the many types originating in the Fars region, but they are woven by distinct peoples. While we are far from experts in discerning exact tribal and village origins, we know a little. This is a Qashqai in our opinion. Made around 1930-1940. It is rather a nice one with very lustrous wool and a tightly woven structure. The colors are rich and luminous with a lovely harmony. While you may see “Shiraz” rugs sold cheaply, they are not of the same quality or spirit. Careful inspection and patient appreciation are warranted. Needless to say we are impressed by this particular rug and know our customers will be too. If you are into rugs, take a look, and if you are a snob about age, maybe not. Find beauty whenever and wherever you can. This baby is 7’3”x9’4” and condition is excellent.
