This impressive antique carpet reminds me of Virgil’s Georgics, an epic poem he published in 29 BCE towards the end of the last civil war of the Roman Republic. One year after Cleopatra’s suicide, a topic I covered in the preceding post.
It is lush with natural scenery and abundant in color. We see a human hand behind the construction of the marbled stone podium on which the flowering vase rests. That in turn reminds me of Keats’ Ode on a Grecian Urn, published in 1819. Much closer in date to the time of creation of this fantastic Tabriz carpet, added today to the collection.

I love this select group of Kork Kashan with Paradise Park design from circa 1900. This is a rare one with ivory field and red border. One of my favourites.
COSIMO
Origin Serapi
Size 365 x 277
Age 1870
Exquisitely fine, heartbreakingly attractive. This glorious Serapi Heriz survives intact and boasts some of the prettiest natural dyes you will see. There's an abundance of saffron and green in the field but the knockout punch is the killer blue border--literally to dye for!
Happiness is ... an unusually large (and wide) Khamseh Morghy (bird) rug with the most beautiful, ravishing sky blue tones. Hundreds of peacocks flutter about in a dizzying array of harmonious natural dyes. The weaver was highly skilled and tasteful, and this shows in the kaleidoscopic colorful segments around the field and within the border. A most excellent antique tribal rug.
305 x 222
Circa 1900-1910
A sublime antique Serapi of the early type with ravishing colors and uncommon size.
The attractive combo of ivory, pinkish red and celestial blue is captivating. The carpet is complete with lovingly distressed areas that beautifully capture the charm of age and patina of time. This warrior has seen many battles and triumphed! The indigo medallion has stubbornly refused to oxidise (typical for the king of natural dyes) and remains, along with many areas, in full pile.
492 x 376
Circa 1865-1875
All natural dyes
In my private collection, a most royal Qajar Tehran circa 1870 with royal crown and an excessively rich flowering vase design. It makes the Millefleurs look simple by comparison.
Very subtle and elegantly saturated natural dyes, composed of tones very tastefully set off against one another. I love the signature Tehran prayer rug spandrels in deep golden saffron.
Perfect condition right down to the end kilim and full pile. This masterpiece has been lovingly preserved by a series of collectors over 150 years and has never been used.
When there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call?
A truly remarkable and unique thing—an oddity of an oversized antique Kerman sampler carpet (vagireh) measuring 300 x 170 cm, circa 1880s
Imbued with tremendous country house charm and decorative appeal, this large Heriz is ideal for a large dining hall or contemporary salon. The proportions are not that easy to find, the dye materials make for a rich allure that lights up any interior.
545 x 320
Circa 1875
Highlight of our summer gallery display is this regal flowery creation—only the second ever 6 sq meter designed & signed by the legendary Grand Master Dabir that I have seen in over 30 years rugging and rolling!
As a wise man says, don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers so if you’re in Beirut please pop in to relieve yourself of the summer sun and whiff the fragrance of this 100+ year old masterpiece.
A fantastic antique Malayer with outstanding provenance. Super rare considering the excellent condition and the allover decorative pattern.
511 x 317 meters
Circa 1880
Simply incredible. A majestic Paradise Park roomsize carpet woven in Kashan circa 1900 using the softest and plushest Manchester Kork wool.
The fiber materials are sensationally fine, the dye materials even more exceptional. The tones are so gentle and alluring, especially the strawberry pink main border and its turquoise outermost guard.
Aesthetically, the Garden Of Eden theme is executed in a most impressive fashion. Lush forestry and dense greenery combine to create a lovingly manicured garden carpet with beautiful details throughout. Birds of paradise flutter around within and without, in between the weeping willows and plane and oak trees. Here and there we see a small house and occasionally a rooster—this was the signature of the weaver, according to the white beards who taught me in the bazar.

Irrepressibly irresistible. A mint condition early Heriz with allover drawing and the most. bodacious natural dyes ever. Ask me for closeups and you'll see what I mean. This will instantly turn your home into a massive statement. The quality is akin to Serapi but chunkier.

Tonight we meet the living legend that is the timeless Persian Isfahan - a time capsule piece from the Fatehi family circa 1950. Preserved intact in our family collection for over 50 years.

Early 1900s
An early Bakhtiar Garden Carpet of ‘Tree’ or ‘Forest’ variety, with the most sensational natural dyes. This is a variation of the Bīd Majnūn style, executed with conviction and panache.
The XXL size suggests it was woven in a Khan’s private workshop. It has an all wool foundation - yes, a startling thing - denoting a XIX century origin (unlike almost all Bakhtiari rugs). The deep saturation of the natural dyes confirms this.
Highest quality antique Isfahan with silk foundation & highlights—the epitome of high class fashion, elegance, and taste in all old world homes for the last 100 years.
330 x 207
Circa 1930
Crazy medallion on this unbelievably beautiful Mishan Malayer!
The field boteh pattern is reminiscent of Saruk Farahan rugs of the same period. The quality & finesse here, however, are top top notch. And so are the stunning colors
PS check out the little animals and birds that pop up here and there!
191 x 123

Survival of the fittest - a pure silk Farahan from a parallel universe. A metaverse of color, beauty, and surreal natural dyes.
Flowing, glowing, and frankly mind blowing.
Only the best of the best for my loyal clients, even if I have to travel thru time and fly thru space to acquire it.
Circa 1840-1860.
All natural dyes including a rare cochineal insect purple in multiple tones, an outrageous turquoise blue and a mesmerising lime green.
Brilliance is .. a Soof Malayer with kilim field & embossed 3D knotted pile spandrels enclosed within a nastaliq calligraphy border. A unique time capsule from the mid 1800s.
Prancing peacocks dancing ducks and … ghastly ghostfish on this: THE MOTHER OF ALL KHAMSEH MORGHY ‘BIRD’ RUGS

Watch this space!
The glimmer of 19th century silk on a gorgeous high quality antique Tehran we recently installed in the Gallery as part of our new display.
I love the shimmer in the gigantic lotus flowers and the subtle earthy coloration the artist relied on. Magnificent!
One of the all time best antique Khamseh rugs to come my way. It belongs to an exclusive subset of tribal carpets from the 1870s that are extremely fine and eloquently woven. As a result the handful of surviving examples are severely worn down—not this!
The velvety handspun wool is brought to life by the gorgeous colors, highlighted by rare instances of yellow and green. The undyed natural white wool adds star quality
It’s hard to find small format Saruk Farahan rugs in Zaronim size. This rare piece is stellar in its quality, plush wool, and attractive natural dyes. Preserved in mint condition and ready to be shipped to its forever home. The size, style and colors make it a great winner for any interior anywhere.

In love with the crazy crazy beautiful natural dyes on this vibrant silk Farahan - one of the oldest out and about. Middle third of the 1800s.
That buzzing lime green is sensational! And the natural orange I haven’t seen elsewhere. And the sky blues oh oh and that purple
Majestic cypress tree, heartwarming flowering vases, and rich Millefleurs blossoms on a regal antique Tehran with breathtaking natural dyes. Exclusive: a signed royal Qajar with Millefleurs (Haj Khanomi) design. This quality was made for the Qajar kings in the 1800s.
Signed by the legendary Grand Master Ostad Asghar, so renowned he didn’t have to mention his full name, in his personal atelier in Tehran. Back then, with a small population, the only workshops were those catering to the royal dynasty and surrounding aristocracy.

Best of type experience
A rather beautiful antique Kashan - quite appealing & attractive, while also being a rare instance of the transitional period linking the Mohtasham (1850-1900) and Dabir (1920-1940) schools.
The layout and arrangement are quite Dabir esque in formality and elegance. However, zoom in and you’ll see that the flowers are drawn in the archaic 19th century Mohtasham style and coloured accordingly. The colour palette is more varied than later Dabir types for sure.
Old school Persian dealers call this uncommon type Ateshoglu while Arab dealers (the old Baghdad bazar especially) refer to it as Ali Akbari. Meanwhile, out west it’s simply another Kashan .. what’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
Lustrous Kork wool in full pile.
